A new yacht is, for many owners, one of the largest single investments they will make. Once designs and specifications have been agreed and contractors selected, constuction

To ensure that our client will take delivery of a properly constructed vessel which conforms to the agreed specifications and drawings we will periodically attend during the build. Reports are sent to the client following each visit and any defects and omissions found will be identified for subsequent rectification. As the owners' technical representative we deal with any matters arising during build which require a resolution. We will coincide visits with stage payments due to ensure payments are made only when the due work has been completed.

Most large yachts undergo regular refits to fulfil statutory requirements, achieve MCA coding, pass Classification Society surveys, update interior or exterior styling, upgrade systems and equipment, refresh paint and varnish and perform major maintenance tasks. David M. Cannel & Associates can act as surveyor on behalf of the client to attend during refits and maintenance periods, ensuring that works are completed to the required standard and in accordance with the specifications. Regular attendance ensures that any problems are identified quickly and resolved smoothly, avoiding costly problems arising at the completion of the project.

All reputable brokers recommend that it is in the interests of the purchaser to have a condition survey of the vessel carried out prior to completion of purchase. Clearly it makes sound financial sense to expend a relatively small sum on the condition survey in relation to the investment to determine the condition of the vessel. Not only will a full condition survey provide peace of mind, but the report and advice may be used to re-negotiate the price if material defects are found.

Many yachts advertised for sale appear to be in excellent condition on the surface, but a detailed examination by an experienced surveyor reveals problems that could become costly to fix. Commonly, underwriters will require a survey of a vessel prior to agreeing to provide insurance, in order to know whether the vessel represents a good risk, and is in sound, seaworthy condition with no pre-existing defects. David M. Cannell & Associates carry out condition surveys which enable all the major marine underwriters to assess risk. Our reports are accepted by those underwriters for insurance purposes.

Cannell & Associates can inspect a vessel following an incident, offering an assessment of the damage, a detailed specification for repairs and investigations into the likely cost of repairs. This is a necessity to ensure that the value and safety of the vessel is not unduly affected by the damage sustained. Further visits during the repairs can be undertaken to check that the repair specification prepared is fully complied with.
